About Us
Mary’s Free Range Chickens is proud to be family owned and operated since 1954. Mary's sons, David and Ben Pitman, are third-generation Pitman farmers who lead the company today. David and Ben have been taught by their father, Rick, who learned from his father, Don, about the importance of animal husbandry and our responsibility to ensure the welfare of animals.
Practices
Mary’s Chickens has joined the 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating Standards Program with Global Animal Partnership. The 5-Step Animal Welfare Rating Program encourages better welfare practices and systems to benefit farmers, consumers, retailers, and the animals. Each step level — Step 1 to Step 5 — has its own requirements that must be met before certification is achieved.
Mary's Chickens has joined Certified Humane Raised and Handled®. This program's goal is to improve the lives of farm animals by expanding consumer awareness, driving the demand for kinder and more responsible farm animal practices.
Mary’s has always been committed to animal welfare. We have been actively engaged in improving the lives of birds from beginning to end, and we are committed to aligning with the nationwide movement to improve the lives of broiler chickens.
As such, we will continue to offer only chicken that is certified and labeled by Global Animal Partnership (GAP), a program recognized by the ASPCA® Shop With Your Heart program, and we will continue to process all our chicken using a multistep controlled-atmosphere processing system.
In taking these steps, Mary’s is proud to offer current and future customers products that meet both versions of The Better Chicken Commitment, a set of higher-welfare standards adopted by leading food companies.
